World Expo: Artivive and AT&S bring artwork to life

The Austria Pavilion at the Expo 2025 in Osaka will be offering visitors a unique attraction from April 13 to October 13: An augmented reality app by the Austrian start-up Artivive will bring the beautiful painting on the historic Osaka folding screen to life. Styrian microelectronics manufacturer AT&S, whose hardware is at the heart of many virtual and augmented reality solutions, is a proud sponsor of this innovative art experience in Japan.
Leoben, April 8, 2025 – The augmented reality start-up Artivive from Vienna and the microelectronics manufacturer AT&S from Leoben cooperate to turn the Austria Pavilion at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka into an interactive experience for visitors. Artivive’s app infuses a work of art from the Schloss Eggenberg collection in Graz with digital life on visitors’ smartphones by adding new dimensions with background information, special effects and voiceover narratives. The painted folding screen is a masterpiece from the early 17th century, 4.8 meters wide and 1.8 meters high, and shows the original Osaka castle complex with parts of the old town. The app uses the camera to recognize which section of the painting a visitor currently has on their smartphone screen and then overlays the appropriate animations with additional information.
“It is an honor to bring the Osaka folding screen from Schloss Eggenberg to life with Artivive’s technology. Through interactive animations and augmented reality, we offer visitors an immersive experience that highlights the cultural connections between Austria and Japan. This project shows how culture and technology can work together harmoniously to shape the future,” says Artivive co-founder Sergiu Ardelean.
Experience in virtual worlds
AT&S will be the patron of the Osaka folding screen experience in the Austria Pavilion for the entire duration of the World Expo in Osaka from April 13 to October 13, 2025. “As a high-tech company and shaping force in the field of digitalization, AT&S has long been an important partner for leading providers of virtual and augmented reality systems. The cooperation with Artivive fits perfectly with the vision of our portfolio of technologies, whose innovations make such computationally intensive visual presentations feasible in many cases. We are delighted to be able to contribute to making the Austria Pavilion an unforgettable experience for all visitors to the World Expo,” says AT&S Head of Communications Gerald Reischl.
The augmented reality presentation of the Osaka pavilion includes elaborate animations of the depicted scenes as well as research results from students at Tokyo University of the Arts and the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Under the direction of Prof. Michael W. Schneider and Prof. Dr. Ruth Mateus-Berr, students examined the visual culture of the work to open up new perspectives and an intercultural dialogue. When users point their smartphone or tablet cameras at the screen, the app automatically recognizes the artwork and loads the digital content in real time, creating new dimensions and interactive stories.
