Mohd Sholihin Abd Razak – Facility Excellence at the Kulim Campus

Some of the most important contributions happen away from the spotlight – in the background, where structure is created. When Mohd Sholihin Abd Razak joined AT&S Malaysia in August 2023, the Kulim Campus was still under construction, shaped by mud, temporary paths, and ongoing building work. This is where his AT&S journey began.

With over 20 years of experience in Electrical & Electronic Engineering and an Executive Diploma from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), he brought not only technical expertise but also calmness, structure, and a strong focus on quality.

“I still clearly remember the early days. We were based in the site office and had to ensure that the G3 Administrative Building was ready for handover.”

Responsibility for cleanliness and quality

Today, Sholihin is responsible for all housekeeping activities at the Kulim Campus – including cleanrooms, non-cleanroom areas, and the preparation of cleanroom garments. Around 100 employees report into his area. For him, one thing is clear, cleanliness is not a detail, but a core element of product quality.

“Housekeeping is demanding. But without discipline, it doesn’t work. Discipline is the key to maintaining hygiene standards.” In cleanroom environments, strict protocols apply depending on the classification level. At the same time, equipment and areas must be handled differently – precision is essential.

Challenges: people, language, and communication

One of the biggest challenges Sholihin faces is working with diverse teams and language barriers. “I conduct daily briefings to ensure everyone understands the requirements – especially HEPA standards and safety protocols.”

As many employees come from different countries, communication plays a central role. With support from translators within the team, he ensures that all information is clearly understood. In addition, he performs regular audits and line walks – about three times per week – to assess performance and quality. “At the end of the day, communication is the key to effective execution.”

More than facility management

Beyond his technical role, Sholihin has a creative side. He is passionate about landscaping. “Plants bring life into a campus – but only if you truly understand them.”

He is also involved in shaping the greenery across the site. For him, plant care and cleanroom processes are surprisingly similar. Both require precision, knowledge, and attention to detail.

Life outside of work

Sholihin is a multi-talented individual: carpentry, drawing, long-distance running, and even ultra-marathons are part of his life. These activities combine creativity, discipline, and endurance. Despite all his interests, his family always comes first.

“I learned the carpentry skills from my grandfather and father, who used to design and build traditional Malay homes. I believe my passion for arts and crafts has compelled me to also take on this skill as a hobby.”
