Melanie Erker – with experience, responsibility, and a passion for training

Melanie Erker has been part of AT&S for many years. Her journey began in September 2009, when she was just 15 years old. “I knew early on that I wanted to do something technical. I was interested in lab work – it was simply my thing.”

Born in Leoben and raised in Niklasdorf, Melanie started her apprenticeship as a physical laboratory technician at the Hinterberg site. She has remained loyal to the company ever since.

From apprentice to a role of responsibility

After completing her apprenticeship, Melanie gradually developed further. She first took on a forewoman position in the laboratory, later followed by the role of training coordinator. Over time, she also became involved in apprentice training—a role she now fulfills with great dedication.

“I enjoy working with people. It’s important to me that apprentices and employees stay motivated and enjoy coming to work.”

Maintaining a positive mindset is particularly important to her: “I try to stay optimistic and bring others along with me. That often works better than pressure.”

Personal development included

Melanie describes herself as someone who didn’t always want to be in the spotlight. “I used to be quite shy. But I’ve grown with my responsibilities.” Today, she finds it easier to take on responsibility, make decisions, and communicate clearly – even when it’s not easy. “That’s especially part of apprentice training. You work closely with people, but you still have to make decisions and stand by them.”

Trust as a foundation

An important part of her journey has been the people who supported her development. Melanie particularly highlights Irene Gruber, her former department head. “She recognized how I was developing and trusted me with it. I’m very grateful for that.” Melanie now passes this trust on – especially to her apprentices.

Proud of the apprentice rotation program

One project that is especially close to her heart is the introduction of apprentice rotation in the physical laboratory. “I think it’s important for apprentices to get to know different areas. It helps them understand connections better. ”Understanding processes is crucial, especially in the physical laboratory. “If you know how a product is created and evaluated, you can work much more effectively.”

Balance through sports

Outside of work, sports play a major role in Melanie’s life. She played football for many years, including in the top league. Later, she discovered CrossFit and now participates in competitions. Traveling, family, and spending time with friends are also very important to her.

Looking ahead

For the future, Melanie primarily hopes for further development – for herself and for training at AT&S. “Exchanging ideas with other apprentice trainers is important. You learn from each other and gain new perspectives.” Her advice to young colleagues and apprentices is clear:

“Even if the beginning is tough, it’s worth sticking with it. You can always continue to develop if you take opportunities.”

For Melanie Erker, AT&S means a good working environment and the opportunity to take on responsibility and continue developing – both professionally and personally.
