Kulim from Day One – Nur Shazana Mohd Faisal
Meet Nur Shazana Mohd Faisal, a pioneer of AT&S Malaysia. Learn all about her behind-the-scenes job in microelectronics industry and about celebrating Aidilfitri in Malaysia and Christmas in Germany.
Born and raised in Kulim, Kedah (Malaysia), Nur Shazana Mohd Faisal has been a part of AT&S Malaysia’s pioneer team since its early days. Name’s too long? Just call her Zana.
“I could still recall the very first day I joined this greenfield project, it was in November 2021,” Zana remembers. “We were a team of six colleagues seated in a temporary cabin office on a vacant land plot. We had no idea what the journey ahead of us would be but we made sure that we did our best to ace the moment one at a time, backed up with our diverse knowledge from past experiences and strong team work.”
Looking back, it has been a rewarding and adventurous journey.
“I am happy to know that I have gained some friends where we still meet up for lunch every now and then in this lifetime.”
Zana is an example of a committed colleague who is thriving in the realm of construction area in the microelectronics industry. She completed her high school education in Malaysia with an inclined interest in athletic sports. She then started her working life as a receptionist, slowly progressed and built her career up towards becoming a Document Controller and now a Project Authority Coordinator for the construction site of the AT&S Campus in Kulim.
This is my job
“In my role as a Document Controller, I have gained hands-on experiences in managing company related documents. I ensure the accuracy, quality and integrity of the documents.” In her current position, Zana is responsible for drafting letters and ensuring complete submission of drawings, architectural plans and other documents to the local authorities and governing bodies for approval processes. She is also one of the point of contacts for liaison with sub-contractors and government officials for necessary approvals.
“My role is usually a behind-the-scenes job and I find this very interesting and value-adding to my diverse experience.”
“I appreciate the opportunities to communicate with people of various backgrounds and personalities. Because of this, I have connected with many great people who are really fantastic to work with.”
“I have expanded my network of connection and this is especially useful whenever there is an urgent task that requires almost immediate actions.”
Zana’s biggest source of inspiration
Family is Zana’s greatest pillar of strength. She currently resides in Penang with her husband and 14-year old daughter. Her life is enriched with cross cultural experiences as her husband is a German. “On top of the multicultural community that we live in Malaysia, I am very blessed and grateful for the cross-cultural experiences as well, thanks to my husband. Each year, during major festival seasons in Malaysia, my family and I proudly celebrate Aidilfitri in Malaysia. On top of that, we go home to Germany every end of the year to celebrate Christmas with my husband’s family.”
“I am very much a local girl who loves my ‘nasi kandar’ (a popular northern Malaysian dish), but my daughter is drawn towards the Western side of our family, as she loves her pasta and pretzels. I believe, there is a good mix of culture and we learn so much values from our extended family in Germany too.”
My key takeaway
Every workplace comes with a challenge. If it is too easy, then you will have nothing new to learn. What will make you stand out is how you navigate the challenges and foster good relationships with your colleagues.
“One piece of advice for my colleagues? I would encourage everyone to always be open-minded to learn new things because that will keep your career journey exciting and allows you to gain memorable skills and experiences. Lastly, be courageous to speak up for your rights and be open to share your input in a respectful manner.”
