From the Lens of a Chemistry Enthusiast – Ooi Zing Yi

Chemistry may not be the cup of tea for many. But, for Zing-Yi Ooi, a Lab Specialist and one of the pioneers of AT&S Malaysia, it is a fun subject and she has made it her career. Let’s hear from her.

Inspiration behind pursuing Chemistry and Engineering

“In my secondary school, I had a good teacher who taught me Chemistry. As a result, I am fond of Chemistry and it has become my favorite subject. As for engineering, I am inspired by my two brothers, who are currently in the field.”

Ooi completed her Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering after obtaining her Bachelor’s Degree in the same field. After graduation, she started as a Procees Engineer in Lab Failure Analysis at a renowned semiconductor company in Kulim and joined AT&S after.

“I decided to join AT&S Malaysia as a Lab Specialist for the invaluable opportunity to set up a laboratory from scratch. I was looking forward to gaining the precious greenfield experience.”

Ooi was offered on-the-job training in AT&S Chongqing. She described it “challenging” as she was among the first few batches who received the on-the-job training opportunity at CHQ. Additionally, during the Covid-19 pandemic, it was a real challenge to travel to Chongqing.

“I hesitated at first as I had to leave my two boys aged 3 and 5 years old behind. It was the longest time, about 6 months, that I was separated from them. With the strong support from my husband and parents-in-law, I successfully completed the training in Chongqing.”

During the weekends, Ooi managed to explore the attraction spots and hunt for food in Chongqing. For this, some cultural learning and fun were added to her stay to Chongqing.

“Looking back, it was an adventurous journey. I was well guided by my colleagues, and I tried to learn as much. I was encouraged because everyone was generous in sharing their experiences with me. Even after I returned to Kulim, all remained very supportive and consistent in providing their guidance to support us setting up the lab. For that, I am always grateful.”

My Greatest Takeaway from my Current Role

According to Ooi, the opportunity to start the laboratory setup from scratch was her biggest take away from her role in AT&S.

“I remember that we worked in the lab when there were no walls and we had to rush for the target of lab qualification. If we failed to meet the deadline, it may have caused a significant impact to a subsequent process. So, we worked hard and we achieved the target.”

Ooi is grateful for the supportive team that she is a part of. The team grew from just 3 people to 20 people today.

“I am managing 17 technicians, an Associate Engineer and an Engineer. This is a big challenge for me but I learn to cultivate a close-knitted team. This is not something that can be achieved overnight, we have slowly but surely developed a strong bond and alignment that make me proud of it.”

“To pursue a similar role as mine, problem-solving skill is essential. Remember, there’s always a solution. We should trust ourselves for solution to a problem. Stay positive and enjoy work journey.”
